Template:Cool Solutions Repository

This article describes how to set up a XRDP terminal server on an UCC. XRDP is a daemon that allows users to open a X session on the server using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). This protocol is natively supported by Microsoft Windows and many other operating systems and thus does not require additional software to be installed on the client PCs. XRDP is already available for UCS in the App Center

UCC thin clients support RDP sessions using freerdp.

XRDP is provided in the Cool solutions repository. To include the repository follow the steps on Howtos UCC 1.0.

Note: Be advised, that the repository contains both the XRDP server and the FreeRDP client.

To install the XRDP server, execute

apt-get install univention-xrdp

on a command-line shell.

Attention: This release is alpha! This means that errors can occur, which might lead to data loss!

Configuration on the terminal server

Allowed users

By default all users of the UNIX group Domain Admins are allowed to connect using RDP. The name of the group can be changed by setting the UCR variable xrdp/access/admins.

Maximum number of concurrent sessions

The maximum number of concurrently running RDP sessions is by default limited to 10 and can be changed using the UCR variable xrdp/sessions/max.

Login window customization

The title and the images used in the login windows can be configured using the UCR variables xrdp/title and xrdp/imagedir.

The directory must contain 4 images using the Windows bitmap format. The first two are used as the rectangular logo at the left side on the input fields, the other two are used for the banner displayed below the input window:

24 bit color logo, 140 x 140
256 color logo, 140 x 140
24 bit color banner, 256 x 192
256 color banner, 256 x 192

Configuration on the UCC client

The UCC terminal server should be configured through a "UCC user session" policy.

The UCC terminal server must be configured as the "Windows terminal server" and "xrdp1" must be set as the "Windows domain".

Known issues

Wrong keyboard layout

When you log into KDE using XRDP, the keyboard is configured to use the US layout by default. To change this open the K-Menu, switch to the Computer tab, open System settings, then open Input devices. There open Keyboard and switch to Layout, select Enable keyboard layouts and add the requested layout. Click on the arrow buttons to reorder the new layout to the top. Apply the changes and close the application.
